Adonai

For many Christians, Adonai is not a new found word for them. If nothing else, I believe The Passion of the Christ has helped many recognize that Adonai is one of the names used for YHVH God. However, what some may not be aware of is that Adonai is the plural form of Adon which means Lord. Did that just make a big question mark appear over your head? Well allow me to explain. Well, maybe more like simplify it a bit for you.

Ever hear God referred to by his attributes? Even if you have yet to open your Bible and read it, at some point during a church service or church event you may have heard God referred to by such monikers as:
  • Lord of Hosts
  • Our Father in Heaven
  • The King of Glory
  • The Great I AM
  • Wonderful Counsellor
The list quite literally goes on and on.

These names we call God, are ways we show that we recognize His Majesty. We know he is more than just God, even though that is sufficient enough. When we humble ourselves and give Him praise, honor and glory just calling Him God or Lord doesn't quite feel like it is enough.

That is what the word Adonai is for. It is a modifier to display the Majesty of the Lord. Used by itself, it conveys an understanding that He is more than just a single being; He encompasses all things. So when you feel like just calling Him God, Father or Lord is not enough, simply call Him Adonai to show that you understand He is more than just God, He is All.

That was a very simplified breakdown of what the word Adonai is. Do a little research to find out just what the plural forms of the names we call God really mean like Adonai and Elohim. There are plenty of books and online resources that can help. Two of my favorite online resources are Hebrew for Christians and the Ancient Hebrew Research Center (AHRC).
